What is Onam?
Onam is Kerala’s grandest annual celebration—a festival of harvest, unity, and homecoming. Legend speaks of King Mahabali, a benevolent mythical ruler whose reign brought peace, prosperity, and equality to all. Today, Onam is celebrated by people of all backgrounds across the globe. Think of it as a vibrant community Thanksgiving filled with music, togetherness, and a magnificent vegetarian feast.

🌺 Pookkalam (Floral Carpet Art)
Walk in and admire our grand Pookkalam—an intricate, circular carpet meticulously handcrafted from thousands of fresh, colorful flower petals. It is a traditional symbol of welcome and prosperity created specifically for the Lansing celebration!
🥁 Chenda Melam (Live Traditional Drumming)
Feel the thunderous rhythm of Chenda Melam—a high-energy ensemble of traditional Kerala drums. Performed in collaboration with Detroit's MoTown Melam, it is an exhilarating live soundscape you won't forget!
💃 Thiruvaathira (Traditional Circle Dance)
Watch gracefully choreographed folk dances performed in traditional white-and-gold attire (Kasavu). Historically performed in honor of Lord Shiva, this dance celebrates grace, harmony, and sisterhood.

🍲 Onasadhya (The Grand Feast)
The ultimate highlight of Onam! Onasadhya is a multi-course, all-vegetarian banquet traditionally served on banana leaves (or eco-friendly banana-leaf styled plates). Featuring over 20 unique dishes—ranging from mild coconut stews and aromatic lentil curries to tangy pickles and sweet payasam dessert—it’s a true culinary journey.
(Don't worry if you've never eaten a Sadhya before—our volunteers are happy to guide you!)
💡 Did You Know? A traditional Sadhya balances all six Ayurvedic taste profiles (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent) to aid digestion and nourish the body.

• Do I need to be Indian or a MAALA member to attend?
No! Everyone in the Greater Lansing community is warmly invited to attend, celebrate, and enjoy the food and culture.
• What should I wear? Is there a dress code?
Come as you are! While many attendees wear traditional Indian attire (such as sarees or kurtas), casual or semi-formal Western clothing is completely welcome.
• Is this event family-friendly?
Yes! It is a family-first event. Please note that the Chenda Melam (live drumming) can be quite loud; families with infants or young children may prefer taking a break in the cafeteria area during the drum performance.
• Is the food spicy?
Not at all! Onasadhya dishes emphasize aromatic coconut, mild lentils, yogurt, and gentle spices rather than fiery heat. There are plenty of mild, comforting dishes suitable for all palates and ages.
• Can I purchase Sadhya tickets at the door?
We strongly recommend booking online in advance. Venue capacity and food preparation numbers are set before the event, so door tickets may not be available if the event sells out.
